Carl Sargeant back as housing minister

Carl Sargeant returns to the housing brief in the new Welsh Government as cabinet secretary for communities and children.

The team for the new Welsh Government was announced by Carwyn Jones on Thursday afternoon after he was sworn in as First Minister.

Former housing minister Lesley Griffiths becomes cabinet secretary for environment and rural affairs while other key appointments include Ken Skates (economy and infrastructure), Mark Drakeford (finance and local government) and Rebecca Evans (social services and public health).

Liberal Democrat AM Kirsty Williams was named cabinet secretary for education.

Carwyn Jones was reinstalled as First Minister on Wednesday following the deal between Labour and Plaid Cymru. Results of the May 6 election left Labour with 29 of the 60 seats in the Assembly, one less member than last time.

Carl Sargeant was minister for housing and regeneration from March 2013 to September 2014. Among the big issues in his in tray will be Labour’s manifesto promises to end the right to buy and deliver an extra 20,000 affordable homes in this Assembly term.
