The TEG programme has given real resources to a significant number of diverse groups drawn from all parts of Wales. In this section you can find out more information on all projects funded to date and access copies of action plans for those projects completed.
TEG Grants have reached all parts of Wales - from the north Wales coast through to rural mid Wales and the valleys, towns and cities of the south east and south west.
Very often it is difficult to engage young people as active citizens within their communities. A number of successful TEGs have focussed on how to address this by finding out what the priorities of young people themselves are and involving them in shaping services for the future.
The number of successful applications received from tenants with support needs has been a positive feature of the TEG programme. Projects have involved bringing together tenants who have accessed Women’s Aid services with the aim of building confidence and empowering them with their respective landlords; engaging homeless families and single people who are tenants of specialist housing associations; and giving a voice to sheltered housing tenants across a council area in partnership with other housing associations.
All TEG projects have to show an awareness of the need to involve all sections the community, especially ‘hard to reach’ areas. Whilst some projects have focussed entirely on engaging people from BME backgrounds, others have aimed to develop participation amongst disabled tenants, those who work during the day, those who live in isolated communities and tenants with literacy problems. Another project helped a group of Somali youths to become more involved in the way their community and services operate.
The range of projects and original ideas on how to give tenants a voice has been most impressive and includes using IT to link up older tenants; using social events and salsa dancing as a way of engaging supported housing tenants; utilising text messaging to engage young people; maximising involvement through toy and book libraries, after school clubs, environmental schemes and cross generational projects; organising fun days; and skiling up tenants to act as service inspectors.
